Mr Csenki, the Head of Music at Haileybury Astana is leading a music trip to the UK. 20 pupils from Year 3 and Year 4 have been learning Kazakh Music and are looking forward to performing in England. The trip will include a visit to Haileybury UK.
You can follow the adventure on http://haileyburymusic.blogspot.com/
In 2012 Haileybury Astana hosted a visit from two veterans of the Second World War. Akhat Bekmady and Minaidar Boranbayev came to tell the pupils about their experiences of war.
This year Mr Bekmady, now 90 years of age, kindly returned to Haileybury on Defenders Day. On arrival he toured the school speaking to the children. Even the very youngest came to shake his hand and say ‘thank you’ and when the year 7 pupils who met Mr Bekmady last year saw him in the corridor they lined up and burst into spontaneous applause.
After his tour Mr Bekmady sat down to talk to the pupils of year 6. It was an opportunity for them to learn directly about the hardships of the Second World War – a topic they have been studying this year. It was also a chance for them to practice their Kazakh. Year 6 then escorted Mr Bekmady to see the tree that he planted on his visit last year before joining him to pay their respects and lay flowers at the Otan Korgaushylar Monument.

Mr Bekmady thanked the teachers for all that they are doing to ensure that the young of today learn the lessons of the past. Pupils in Year 6 come from many countries that fought in the Second World War, today they study together and form strong international friendships for the future. Haileybury Astana is proud to remember those who fought in all conflicts particularly on Victory Day - 9 May and on the British and Commonwealth equivalent - 11 November - Remembrance Day. We look forward to the opportunity to host Mr Bekmady many times in the future.

This year a new online, interactive mathematics resource has been introduced at Haileybury Astana. Over 3 million students in 9,000 schools around the world use this tool to support their mathematics learning. Teachers set tasks in class and for homework via the website and since it was introduced, pupils have enjoyed using the resource to improve their Numeracy skills. At Haileybury Astana, pupils from Year 1 to Year 7 each receive an individual login, which means they can access the resource not only at school but also at home, or through the new mobile application.
There is not only a student section, but also teacher and parents section so pupils’ progress can be viewed easily and their work adapted accordingly. This gives them the opportunity to practise their mathematical skills and to consolidate new concepts learnt in class.
Pupils also get the chance to take part in “Live Mathletics”, and compete online against other children, from all over the world. Children collect points from everything they do on the site and this is collated on a High Score Leaderboard. There have already been a number of outstanding individual and class results, which has meant a number of pupils and classes are already featured on the board.
Mathletics motivates pupils and keeps them engaged in their learning of Mathematics.
“98% of students show improvement after just three activities.” (Mathletics website)
