'The study of mathematics, like the Nile, begins in minuteness but ends in magnificence.' Charles Caleb Colton

The study of mathematics is, perhaps, the most vital of all subjects.  A full understanding of Mathematics enables us to make sense of the world around us.  At Haileybury Astana we promote a thorough approach to learning Mathematics through exciting and engaging lessons.  Pupils are taught, not only the Mathematical skills that they need to progress through their school and university careers but also how to apply these skills to problem solving across the curriculum and real life situations.

At Key Stage One pupils develop the knowledge and understanding gained in Pre-Prep through a variety of practical and written exercises. We concentrate on developing the pupils' understanding of the place value of numbers and how these are used in calculations, recognition of and the properties of shapes, meaures used in everyday life and data handling.  The pupils are taught strategies to use these skills in order to solve problems effectively.

In Key Stage Two pupils develop their knowledge of the number system to include decimals and fractions.  They are taught mental and written strategies to support their mathematical understanding.  In addition they explore the more complex properties of shapes as well as applying their knowledge of measures to relevant situations.  Pupils extend their grasp of different data handling strategies and learn to collect, organise, sort and present information in the most appropriate manner.    Their mathematical language is widened and their problem solving extended to include the reasoning behind the solution.

In Key Stage Three pupils’ knowledge base is developed and extended in order to prepare them for the IGCSE and IB examinations.

We strive for excellence in the Science programmes at Haileybury Astana. We believe in positive reinforcement and rewards for good work. We hope that pupils are inspired and enjoy our courses, and this will drive their ambitions to continue their further education in Science.  At Haileybury Astana we see Science first and foremost as a practical subject. This means that we endeavour to include in our courses the skills pupils need to successfully design, carry out and evaluate practical experiences in science.

An educated person needs information as well as the skills to understand modern science and to see the applications in their everyday lives. Education is not just the acquisition of facts. It should also give pupils the skills to understand modern day life and the tools to acquire and understand information in this ever expanding and global subject.

The Kazakh Department makes use of curricula and textbooks recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Likewise, The Kazakh Department Staff develops additional materials and teaching aids for the purpose to diversify the teaching and learning process to improve the mastering of the Kazakh language of pupils.  A wide range of motivational teaching activities and aids are used during the lessons. Taking into consideration the varying levels of ability as pupils join us pupils, differentiated groups are formed due to the pupils’ level of grammatical and lexical stage of knowledge.

In teaching Kazakh, it is always important to relate the language taught with history, literature and geography too. Hence, some elements of literature, history and geography are used in teaching the language. Pupils have the opportunity to reinforce more about Kazakhstan, its history, geography, economics and culture and its traditions and customs.

Russian at Haileybury Astana is one of the three languages in Years 1-6. As the school is new, pupils come from different schools (with Russian and Kazakh language teaching).  At Haileybury Astana the differentiated groups are now formed according to the level of grammatical knowledge, previously studied in local schools.

We operate by a modified curriculum programme currently used in the Republic of Kazakhstan. In lessons of Russian as a native language the textbooks and the materials recommended by the Ministry of Education of Republic Kazakhstan are used. For lessons of Russian as a foreign language textbooks and associated materials are used, they are published in Russia where the methodical base for teaching Russian as a foreign language is produced.
